Embroidering

Photo © Aina - Modern Country

I haven't shown much of my work lately. ( Some may think I've quit sewing and embroidering completely ) But I am still enjoying it very much. Since a couple of years ago I have been working with white on white embroidery. I started with simple small letters but gradually tried out bigger and more challenging patterns. I adore the padded look of these monograms, this one I've just started. A few stitches more, then adding the flowers. Excited about the finish. Eventually it will be a part of a Christmas stocking.

The weather is lovely, it's like the sun is giving me a tight warm hug. Makes me happy. I think I will take my work with me outdoors...

Wish you a beautiful day too, and a great start to the week.

Inspiring place

Via one of my favourite blogs on tumblr, Bread & Olives, I recently discovered Walnuts Farm. A rustic shoot location house, used as film and photographic shoot location in East Sussex UK. The location can be used throughout each season and props are available to compliment the shoot. It is a traditional farmhouse built around 1800 with a separate two storey granary outbuilding, with an exceptionally beautiful garden surrounded by meadows and woodland. Nick & Bella`s inspiring farmhouse is also featured in Ros Byam Shaw`s sumptuous book Perfect English Farmhouse with beautiful photographs by Jan Baldwin.

With a neutral colour palette, particularly the many different shades of faded grey (painting from Farrow & Ball) I am entranced by the atmospheric layout they have achieved decorating both exterior and Interior. This place gives me endless ideas !

Tranquil...

Beautiful oak framed porch. I like the colour of the door also.

The workshop

Bags and baskets to use as props

The library

Sitting room - painted with farrow & Ball`s "downpipe"

The kitchen - just marvellous

With these alluring images, have a beautiful weekend !

Late summer

Late summer is approaching its end, but it is still quite warm and sunny here in south east of Norway. I have eagerly been waiting for months to enjoy harvesting fruits and vegetables from our garden ( also from our neighbours, since neither one of them are living there at the moment ) I have been picking rhubarb, cherries, red currant, plums and apples. I feel utterly happy and lucky having a garden. Where I live, very few never or hardly use theirs. I don`t know why, maybe because of their hectic lifestyle, or lack of interest. I always wonder and it sometimes baffles me.

Plums, beautiful red plums. I remember, my shirt got stained. I could not get rid of it either. Now, always a reminder of that particular day I sat down eating with both hands. Spitting the pit into the grass, the cats were running after it.

I tried to be there first, always a battle between the magpies and me. Yes, how can someone resist something as sweet and cheerful like these?

I don`t own acres of land and probably never will, most of my fruits and vegetables comes from the supermarket. Although I really would have loved to be totally self-sufficient. Unfortunately we don`t have a weekly market, now and then I visit the Farmers market in a small town 45 min away.  But I have enough place to grow what I like, tomatoes, herbs, chillies and lettuce. Last year I tried another two favourites, broadbeans and peas. Sadly many just rotted away. This year I am playing safe, but could not resist adding a few beetroot plants as well. I am so proud of what I have achieved, despite nearly half of the seed I planted back in February died. But rest of them came out so strong and healthy !

End of July - Tiny beetroot plants

This morning - the colour has changed. Almost there now.

I hope they will taste good. I love the earthiness, newly harvested they sometimes taste as if you are biting into clean sweet earth. Yesterday I found a beetroot chocolate cake recipe. For those who love both it sound like the perfect marriage. Tempting..

Back from holiday

Hi everyone ! How was your summer ? I hope you had a marvelous few months. Myself was lucky enough to spend a couple of weeks with my husband in one of our favourite scandinavian country, Denmark. Staying there, it is like a feeling of relaxation washing  over me like an old familiar friend. I feel safe and calm and it is easy to unwind.

Out in the garden outside our rented holiday home. This is the third year coming back to Lejre, a peaceful cultural village outside Roskilde town. It feels like home now.

The garden is sheltered, lush and green, home for vegetables, lavender, butterflies and also a little family of blackbirds.

There are a lot of different things to explore in Lejre, it is called the "land of the Legends". It is actually an open-air park in the most beautiful Danish countryside, where you can stroll among reconstructions of the ancient living enviroments, like the Age village, the stone Age camp, the viking market and the 19th century farm cottages.

The fabulous castle of Ledreborg  or Fredriksborg is worth a visit also, but my favourite thing to do is just have a quiet walk or drive around and soak up the peacefulness and the natural surroundings. I could watch the beautiful horses grazing on the fields forever..

Taking time to unwind is lovely, but of course we could not sit still for long. Lejre is a meetingplace for people with interest in organic lifestyle, myself included. Lejre has the aim of becoming the first "organic municipality" in Denmark, and has therefore a huge number of local farmers and others that produces a healthy and varied range of products. With markets every Wednesday and Saturday, you are spoiled with a large assortment of freshly made salamis, locally produced cheeses (got to have my cheese!!), organic bread, honey, fish, fruits and vegetables.

There are plenty of organic places to visit nearby Lejre, one of them are Herslev Bryghus. A charming micro brewery in the village of Herslev. The day we went was incredible hot and humid, it could not have been a better moment to arrive at their doorstep. It was perfect for a little taste of their cold organic beers. Have you ever tasted beer made with honey and chamomile ?? None of us had. Very surprised by the bitter taste it was not as sweet as I thought it might be. But I really liked their "Midsommerbryg", sweet and light as summer. I had this great plan to take a lot of tasty pictures, well I didn`t. Cooling down was the only thing on my mind...

   - The Herslev farm shop is a member of Regional madkultur Sjælland and Culinary Heritage Europe. I loved the look of their shop !These green boxes, what a beautiful way to display your products. I had to buy a bottles of their beer vinegar, curious about how it will work with what I normal cook.

Fields of grain nearby our holiday home. I just had to stop and have a look. What a sight..

We visited a numerous of Farm Shops also, since there is very few where I live. Sidinge (also member of the Culinary - Heritage, region Sjælland Denmark) was by far the most memorable with their wide range of high quality products like their own ageing beer, wine, chocolate, production of different kinds of jams and other delicacy, gift items, vegetables, apples from their own apple orchard and a huge selection of cheese. Homemade jam, chutney and relish are produced in the small kitchen behind the farm shop. I know these delicates goes well with the cheese !

My husband is Dutch, and they are known to be very passionate about their cheese. They eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner or as snack. So this visit was inspiring for the both of us. I loved their homemade jams and chutney that I brought back, also can`t wait to taste their apple juice. Beautiful bottles, I will use them for water later when emptied...

I am still lingering in vacation mood, although I have been quite busy harvesting, parboiling and storing a lots of fruits and vegetables these last couple of weeks. Telling you more about that very soon. Have a great start to the week !

Favourites

I love scented Geraniums.

This is my absolute favourite, "Pelargonium Fragrans" (also known as nutmeg geranium).
The leaves and flowers are edible and has a very special but fantastic smell. It is hard to put my finger on it, a note of wood, nutmeg, a hint of mint and spice...I find it highly addictive, I can`t stop rubbing those leaves ! Many cooks love using the plant in cool drinks, desserts, and for adding flavours to jellies, vinegars and different fruit dishes.

I have always liked Daisies ( Nellis perenniss), they are simple but still they make our garden look so beautiful. And look, Julie loves them too !

Start of Summer

Photo © Aina - Modern Country

Hi everyone, thank you for being so patient with me !
Summer is here, I can`t believe we are in June already, can you ? I am so sorry for not keeping my promise to blog more often. The weather has been fantastic for weeks so I have been making the most of it. Painting, doing some carpentry, and working in the garden as well.

A couple of weeks ago our apple trees were covered in beautiful clusters of fragrant blossoms. In full bloom, you won`t believe how amazing the smell is! I used every opportunity to walk by and have a sniff. This particularly morning I had been working hard, cutting down a couple of bushy trees, helping our landlord. Walking up and down the garden with branches in both hands countless times, which is quite steep, I was tired and longing for a break. I could not have been happier, having a break here at this beautiful spot. I put up our hammock between the veranda and these charming trees that overlooks the greenhouse. With my head on the pillow I was staring through the shimmering leaves, dangling my feet and thinking about how grateful I am to be surrounded by greenery and friendly neighbours...

Spring is here !

I can`t hide my excitement, spring is finally here !! I am so happy !!

The first signs is everywhere to be seen, small leaves on birch, apple, pear, plum and cherry trees. New buds are popping up every day and all the birds are singing their favorite songs, making mornings very cheerful. The cats are exploring and jumping around celebrating the new season also.

It was beautiful last week, how lovely it was to see a bit of sunshine. I spent several of hours out in the garden soaking it all up, taking a few shots as well. Here are some of my favourites. Hopefully you are enjoying these wonderful days also.

Have you seen any signs of Spring yet ?

Hi friends I hope you are well and happy.

Thank you for reminding me and letting me know that I am missed. I hope I am not letting you down, sorry about the infrequent posts. It will soon change, I promise you !

Have you seen any signs of spring yet ? I am waiting impatiently to see any changes. Although it is still cold (during the night about -8) we have been enjoying more sunny days than normal. The light is different, it changes. From grey and cold, the light is now intense bright and a bit warmer in colour. Makes getting up in the morning definitively a little easier ! Here in Norway we barely see any natural light during the winter time, no wonder we are getting a bit out of "happy" energy sometimes.
The benefits of warm and beautiful sunlight are significant for everyone, me too.

A couple of years ago I wrote about my little trip to Dyhre nurseries. It was a delightful experience, a beautiful little treasure trove of lovely things to admire. Among the things you can take home are antique French garden furniture, lamps, nice pottery, a huge selection of herb plants ( which I really like ), exotic trees and much treasured European plants like roses and Pelargonium. Small round tables are set in one of the decorated greenhouses surrounded by flowers and vintage furniture's, where you could enjoy your coffee or cup of tea. It`s quirky and charming, and feels very special. I felt really inspired by the surroundings too, set in the beautiful countryside with fields and farmhouses. The nurseries are now closed but around Easter time they will once again open their doors for customers. I am definitively taking another trip back, I need a fresh new Rosemary tree and maybe a couples of terracotta plant pots. They always have a few of those you never find elsewhere.

Here are a few pictures from last trip mixed with a few of their own...
( and here`s my enthusiastic story if interested )
